Animals were used from the beginning of the XIX century. Today this topic is very controversial due to the treatment of the animals. Over the years the circus has performed acts using elephants to monkeys and tigers. The beginning of the circus saw equestrian acts. A lot of countries today prohibit the use of animals in the circus.
Strange Beings?
More commonly known as ‘Freak Shows’, the circus has used distinct biological expression in the human body to make a profit. This in reality meant, due to a deformity in the human being, entertainment was provided to the public. These people were labelled Circus Freaks, Freak Shows were very common during the XIX century.
Today
Today’s circus presents us with an eclectic mix of performers from acrobats to dancers, jugglers, comedians, clowns, entertainers, unicyclists, fire twirlers; a real spectacle for the audience.
Perhaps some of the most well known circuses in today’s world are: Circ Du Soleil and The Chinese State Circus.
